John walked up the path that led to his front door and sighed as he dug out his keys. It had only been a few days, several hours, it should not have been such a huge deal; he tried to tell himself. One girl couldn’t possibly mean so much in such a short time. He nodded to confirm it to himself before he opened the door. He would forget about her and that would be the end of it.
Chester was quick to greet him and started to lick his hand. John smiled down at him before he knelt and began to rub behind Chester’s ears.
“Okay so you might be mad at me.”
John raised an eyebrow and looked up at Frank.
“That’s just the sort of thing I want to hear when I first walk in the door…”
Frank rubbed the back of his neck. “You’re going out tonight, with me and some of the other lads.”
“I am? You know, I really don’t feel like it…” John stood and put his keys on the table.
“More reason to come with me!” Frank said not even bothering to hide his grin. “Look, it’ll be just the thing to cheer you up. Now come on, we’ll grab a bite to eat and then go clubbing. Come on mate, please?”
John sighed. Perhaps a distraction was best after all. Besides, Frank wouldn’t stop prattling on about it till he went or threw an almighty fuss to stop it. And he realized he didn’t have the energy to fight about it so he sighed in resignation.
“Very well, if I must. When do we leave?”
Frank grinned and put his hands in his pockets. “Well, I’ll go back round to mine to change and then I’ll come back to get you in say about two hours?”
John shrugged and moved further into his house. “Have it your way then. I’ll be ready.”
Frank beamed to himself and left John’s house. He was very pleased to know that his scheme was working out very well. He just hoped the rest of the night continued to progress in the same way.
Emily shook her head as she watched Jessica brush her hair. Her friend seemed to be completely lost in thought and had been ever since she had arrived back to the room. Emily had tried to pry a few details from her but nothing more than several one-worded answers ever left her mouth. Finally, Emily sighed and gave up and just watched as Jessica seemed totally out of it.
She was thinking about calling Tyler over to see if he could get something out of her when a knock came on the door. Emily watched for a second to see if Jessica would even notice. Emily sighed when she didn’t and moved over to answer the door.
The door opened to reveal a brown-headed man with his hand in one of his pockets while he rested on the doorframe.
“Excuse me,” he started in a funny accent and Emily frowned trying to understand what he was saying. “But is Jessica here?”
Emily blinked and only recognized Jessica’s name in his speech before looking over her shoulder. She looked back at the stranger, looked him up and down once, before she shrugged.
“Just a second.” Emily moved back over to where Jessica was sitting and shook her shoulder. “Hey Jess? There’s some guy here for you…”
Jessica blinked and frowned. “Who?”
Emily shrugged. “I don’t know.” She then lowered her voice. “But he talks funny, not like other British guys around here. Do you want me to send him away?”
Jessica looked over to the door and her eyes widened.
“No I do not Emily!” She squeaked before she stood up and smoothed out non-existent wrinkles in her shirt before she moved over to the door. “S-Steven Gerrard. How can I help you?”
Stevie looked her over and a lopsided grin crossed his face. “No wonder JT has his head in the clouds, I wouldn’t blame him at all.”
Jessica blushed and pushed a strand of hair behind her ear. “That doesn’t answer my question.”
Stevie pushed off the doorframe and stood up straight before he cleared his throat. “Miss Jessica, I’m here to collect you and take you out to dinner with myself and several others. JT will be there as well, and so will Lampsy. But you can sit with me if you want.” He grinned again and Jessica found herself smiling along.
“Just a minute, let me change clothes.” Jessica stepped back from the door and turned to move over to her half-packed suitcase. “You want to come too Emily?”
Emily watched her with an incredulous look before she shook her head. “Are you crazy? Do you know what you’re getting yourself into? Going off with some stranger in a foreign city! What if you get into trouble?!”
Jessica pulled out a black dress she didn’t remember packing before starting for the bathroom. “Em, don’t worry. It’ll be okay. I’ll be back before you know it.”
“What about the plane tomorrow? Remember, we’re going home? Back where we belong?” Emily crossed her arms as Jessica shut the door.
“Don’t worry Emily, I’ll be back in time for it. Just relax, okay?” Jessica changed quickly and gave herself a once over in the mirror. She decided she didn’t look half bad and fluffed her hair before she walked out.
“I’ll relax. I’ll relax on the plane tomorrow, if you make it.” Emily’s face held a scowl. Jessica sighed.
“Look, I’ll be there okay? Just trust me. And I’ll see you later, okay?” Jessica looked her seriously in the eyes before walking back towards the door. She summoned a smile to her face when she saw Steven. “I’m ready Stevie G.”
Steven smiled again and offered his arm before they started down the corridor.
“I was told you are a Liverpool fan…” Steven started and Jessica relaxed easily. This night couldn’t possibly get any better.
Jessica looked out the window of the very nice car that Steven drove and tried to calm her nerves. She was thrilled that she was this close to her club’s captain but at the same time felt incredibly nervous.
“So remind me again why you’re here? Not that I’m not thrilled that you are but it just… It seems like a long way for you to come from Liverpool for no really good reason.” Jessica looked over and saw Steven shrug.
“I got a call from Lampard earlier today and took a train down here. I don’t mind. I just couldn’t wait to see what such a fuss was over.” He looked at her and gave her another grin. “Now that I’m here, I’m actually jealous of him.”
Jessica smiled before she looked back out the window. Then she frowned. “Fuss? What fuss?”
Steven looked back across the road. “Well, according to Lamps, the Chelsea skipper is having some girl troubles. Lampsy seemed to think that I would interest you, for some reason.” Steven hid his smile and Jessica thought that over.
“He…wants to make Terry jealous?” She frowned. “Why?”
Steven let out a long breath as they came to stop outside a restaurant. He parked the car and looked over at her. “I don’t know what all you know, but JT hasn’t had the world’s greatest record with women. I’m sure Lampsy knows more about this than I do, but from what I’ve seen, the last one he had was a good enough actress to be on the stage and hurt him really bad. That was several months ago.”
Steven shrugged and undid his seatbelt. “Frank seems to think that you are the key to getting him out of his funk.”
“So in a way he’s using me.” Jessica said and mirrored Steven’s movements. She did feel bad about John, she really truly did. But she wasn’t comfortable with the way this was sounding.
“In a way, yes. But he also saw how John seemed to like you, something I haven’t seen yet. So there must be a good reason.” Steven offered her a hopeful smile. “If you don’t want to go through with this, I understand. I don’t want you to get hurt cause you seem really nice. I can take you back right now and just tell Frank that I couldn’t find you, if you want?”
She looked at Steven and considered it. He was giving her a way out that she should take. He was providing her with a way to escape before she got way in over her head. Steven didn’t want her to be hurt by this little scheme of Frank’s.
Touched by the gesture, she looked back levelly at Steven.
“Frank wants JT jealous. Let’s make him jealous Steven.”
Steven watched her for a moment before nodding once, a glint of mischief in his eyes.
“Let’s go make the blue captain see how he likes a pair of Scousers.” Steven’s grin returned and he opened his car door.
Jessica climbed out of the car and wondered if at the end of this trip whether she would be happy of the choice she had just made. She gave a small smile to Steven and decided that she would think about it later. Right now she had her captain fantastic and was definitely going to enjoy this night.
