The sun showered the city with golden light as it continued to get higher and higher in the sky as the day continued on. The temperature continued to rise in an unpleasant state because, unlike with most other days, the usually ever-present sea breeze was noticeably absent. As the heat continued to rise, more and more windows throughout the city opened in an effort to get relief.

At l'acadèmia, the case was no different. Several of the classrooms had their windows open in an effort to remove the stuffiness. Despite the small comfort of fresh air, it did not remove the lethargic haze that had settled heavily over the chemistry classroom.

Señor Alonso had recognized long ago that he was losing the attention of his students and had decided against giving his lecture. Instead, he decided to let them read the chapter that he would have lectured on and answer questions. Some might call it laziness, but he insisted inwardly that it was practical. He would look up at various points to check on his students when he would hear whispering. Occasionally he would make a comment to silence the ones talking before he would resume his grading of the previous classes homework.

It was after he silenced two giggling girls that he caught sight of Cesc. The boy was chewing on the end of his pen in thought but he noticed that Cesc was hardly writing, even after reading and turning pages. While Vicente, on the other hand, read and scribbled on his notebook paper as he went.

Xabi was about to sum it up as just a studying habit when he saw Cesc sigh heavily and run his hand over his face. Something tugged at him, perhaps it was a distant memory that he suppressed on purpose, but Xabi set his papers down along with his grading pen.

“Cesc, may I see you outside in the hall for a moment please?”

Cesc looked up in surprise at being called out. He was trying to be like the others and work, what had he done wrong? He looked over at Chente questioningly. All Vicente offered was a confused look and a shrug before he turned the page in his textbook. Cesc sighed and capped his pen before he pushed his chair back from the table and stood up silently.

Cesc walked out the door and Señor Alonso followed him out a moment later. He stopped a few meters away from the door and waited for his teacher to inform him as to why he had been called out of class.

“I’m sorry to interrupt Mister Fabregas, but you seemed very distracted.” Xabi spoke in a soft tone to prevent eavesdropping from the other classes.

Cesc felt his eyes on him, watching and waiting for a reaction. He shrugged. “I am fine sir. Thank you for your concern but…I’m okay.”

Xabi nodded with a small smile on his lips. “Now how about we have the truth?”

Cesc sighed and leaned against the wall. “I am okay, honestly. I just…I am just tired today.”

Xabi stayed silent for a few moments while he studied Cesc’s face before he took a step back. “You may go back now. I will return in a few moments.”

Cesc nodded once in silent resignation and he pushed off from the wall and moved back towards the classroom with slumped shoulders. The entire walk back to the door felt oddly like the walk of shame as he felt Señor Alonso’s eyes on him every step of the way.

He walked back inside the class and resumed his seat. As he picked up his pen once more, he felt Vicente nudge his arm while he leaned over.

“What was that all about?” He whispered.

Cesc shrugged. “I don’t know.”

“You aren’t in any trouble, are you?”

Cesc saw the worried look on Chente’s face and he shook his head. “He just asked how I was. He said he would be back in a minute.”

He shrugged and then turned back to his work. Vicente gave Cesc a look of confusion before he sat back in his chair and put his book back in his lap and resumed working.

Xabi waited for Cesc to return to the classroom before he started down the corridor towards one of the teacher’s lounges. When he walked inside, he was pleased to see that the room was empty. He walked over to the telephone and picked it up and waited for one of the secretaries to pick up.

“Hello? Yes, I would like to place a phone call to one of my student’s guardians please. The student? Francesc Fabregas.”

Bojan sat on the front steps outside the house and watched as the boys down the street played football. He contemplated asking if he could join them but then as he thought about it, he really wasn’t the footballer type. He watched Kaka steal the ball away from one of the other boys and move back towards the opposite side of the street.

“He is good, isn’t he?”

The suddenness of the voice made Bojan jump. He looked over and saw Sergio leaning on the wall. Bojan nodded in reply before looking back over at Kaka.

“They say he is going to go to La Masia when he gets a little older.” Sergio continued as he pushed off from the wall and moved over to sit next to Bojan on the step. “Wouldn’t that be something to see?”

Bojan nodded. “It would be a little strange though, don’t you think?”

Sergio nodded. “Very strange. A boy we knew around here going on to be a great footballer.”

“It would be very good for him though.” Bojan said a moment later.

They both kept their eyes on Kaka and watched as the boy kept proving his talents over and over. Eventually Sergio sat back and started to watch Bojan instead of the match down the street.

“Why are you sitting out here for? It is hot today, why aren’t you inside?”

Bojan shrugged. “No one else is home and I would rather get some sun than sit inside anyway.”

“Where’s Cesc? Shouldn’t he be with you?” Sergio asked confused.

Bojan shrugged once again. “He and Vicente went out somewhere after school to do something, I don’t know…”

Sergio raised his eyebrow but did not comment. “Want to come hang out with me and Nando this afternoon?”

Bojan raised his eyebrows at the invitation and gave Sergio a surprised look. “Wouldn’t that be imposing on you? I don’t want to be a bother to anyone…”

Sergio chuckled as he watched Bojan bite his lip. “No, it’s fine. I invited you remember? And besides, all we are going to do is listen to the new auditions anyway. It’s not much, but it’s something to do…”

“New auditions?” Bojan asked interested.

Sergio nodded. “Yeah, our keyboard player dropped out of our band to go off to University somewhere.”

“You’re in a band?”

“Yeah with Nando and Alexis. Kun was our keyboard player but he doesn’t count now.” Sergio had started with a grin but it had faded to a frown by the end of his sentence.

Bojan shifted to face Sergio. “How different is playing the keyboard compared to a regular piano?”

Sergio looked over and frowned further in thought. “I don’t know. It wouldn’t be that much different, I would think. Why? Do you know somebody who can play?”

“Yeah, I can play a regular piano.”

Sergio’s eyebrows rose and he shifted closer. “How well? Like, it’s just a hobby or you could actually maybe do it in a concert hall?”

Bojan felt a blush creep over his face slightly. “I would like to think I’m better at it than most people but that doesn’t mean anything.”

“Would you like to try the keyboard? It would really help us out but I get it if you don’t want to.” Bojan did not miss the look of earnest that appeared in Sergio’s eyes nor did he miss the acute expression of interest on his face.

“I haven’t played in a really long time.” Bojan bit his lip but pushed forward when he saw the look of disappointment on Sergio’s face. “But I could give it a try, I mean, if it would help…?”

Sergio reached over and pulled Bojan into a one-armed hug. “You have no idea how grateful I am. Thank you Bojan!”

Bojan hugged Sergio back awkwardly and tried to quell the desire of being able to play again. He had missed having ivory keys under his fingers very much.

“I will try my best.” Bojan gave Sergio a shy smile and blushed slightly when Sergio grinned back at him.

“Come on then, let’s get over to the club where the auditions will be. We’ll see how good you are.”

Bojan felt butterflies in his stomach as he stood up. He wondered if he shouldn’t have just kept quiet about his favorite hobby to Sergio.
