writerverse's Challenge #22: Last Night's Text.
Text I chose: (613) How do you say "get out of my apartment" in Spanish. No time to explain, just tell me.
The familiar warmth of sunlight streaming through the balcony door was comforting against her skin; at least, that’s what the first thought she had was. The second was how much her head was throbbing from the alcohol she’d deduced that she had drunk the night before. Her throat was dry, her body was tired and limp, and she could only guess that what had been a great outfit the night before was now rumpled and probably ruined.
And then she realized she was naked. Not a completely unusual occurrence, she surmised and essentially shrugged it off. No big deal. It happened. She probably had come home and stripped down because, well, it had been a rather warm evening last night.
Satisfied with that answer, Anna settled back into her pillows and let the warm sunlight continue to warm her back. She stayed in her sated state for another few moments before she realized something else.
The shower was running, and somebody was singing something from inside it. Somebody that sounded an awful lot like a man.
Something akin to panic raced through her body as her eyes snapped open. Anna stayed completely still and, for a few seconds, even refused to breathe. It wasn’t in her behavior at all to bring someone home, especially a man, after going out to the club. It wasn’t something she did ever so why—?
Slowly, cautiously, Anna shifted upwards—making sure to hold the bed sheets tightly around her torso, and to move slowly due to her head—and swallowed nervously while she looked at the door. She dare not open it to see who was showering in her room and she didn’t have the energy to make a run for it until they got the hint and left. Besides, who actually knew what sort of person they were? What they might do to find her…all alone…naked…in her bedroom…
Anna mentally slapped herself. Well there was no point in that now. If she was naked in her bedroom, which she was, then it was probably already a good chance that the mysterious showering man—which, it definitely was a man the Spanish singing voice cleared that up in a hurry—had already seen her naked. Modesty was brushed aside when curious embarrassment overtook her system. What if the mystery man was Raul?
She hesitated a moment. Raul was the ever so easy on the eyes Spaniard that lived next door. He had a charm about him that she had liked at first, but he could quickly grow infuriating. He liked to tease her, push her buttons so that she got flustered and said stupid things that she wished later she could take back. She knew she amused him by doing that and so she would always make sure to have a quick retort for the next time. He wasn’t cruel in his teasing, but he was annoyingly wonderful. And handsome.
Anna found herself not being completely horrified if it was Raul in the shower, but as she listened at the door, she quickly realized that it wasn’t him. While the voice had a distinctive Spanish lilt, it didn’t match Raul’s deep voice. Panicking internally, Anna moved across the room to her closet where she clambered into some shorts and a tank top. She left the closet and searched her room as best she could for her phone.
As her hand closed around the device, Anna heard the door pop open and could smell soap and shampoo wafting out of her bathroom. She swallowed and looked up at who the mystery man was. Anna was slightly disappointed. It wasn’t Raul, but someone that was fairly similar to him instead. He had almost the same darker color of skin, except this man’s was slightly lighter than Raul. His eyes were a bit too small, his nose a bit too long, and his hair, well that was just wrong completely.
Anna realized that she should be doing something else than be disappointed that this man wasn’t Raul. Like find out what happened last night.
“Um…hi.” She started and then grimaced. Brilliant opener, she thought with a groan.
“Hola princesa. Dormiste bien?”
Frowning slightly, Anna tried to figure out what he said after hello. Spanish was not her strong suit, a fact that Raul took great delight in teasing her about when he got the chance.
“Uh…um…n-n-no com-comprende?”
“Sí, yo sé.” The rest of what he said was lost on Anna because it all came out in a rapid burst of Spanish. It sounded nice, but from the way he was looking at her—up and down and all over—made her feel very, very uncomfortable.
Deciding to eat some crow anyway, she swallowed her pride.
“Just…one second.” She said and then side stepped him to start for the kitchen. She made sure to leave plenty of room between him and herself, a boundary that she was relieved to see he kept. She didn’t look at him again as she left the room and all but ran towards the kitchenette. She flipped on the coffee maker as she scrolled through all the names and numbers she had in her phone.
Finding him at last, Anna selected Raul’s number and began to prepare a text message.
She heard something move from behind her and she spun quickly while her eyes widened. Juan, the name she had just made up for her guest, had practically appeared on the other side of the counter! Shortening the message a bit in her mind, she quickly typed it out without looking back at it. She hoped there wasn’t a typo and that Raul would actually answer in a relatively quick manner.

He could hear a commotion from next door, it sounded like furniture being moved but he shrugged it off. Whatever Anna did after a night’s romp was up to her. He wished he didn’t know that, but after the sounds he’d heard and the cries of ‘Manuel’ coming through the walls, he wished he didn’t know a lot of things anymore.
He was drinking a beer on the small balcony that he called his own with his phone on the table and the paper’s crossword in his lap. He wasn’t really doing it; instead, he was looking out over the balcony and watching the people walking on the sidewalk below. People were more interesting than puzzles, though they could be one in the same, he’d noticed.
Deep inside his musings, it took the warning vibrate from his phone to tell him he had a new text message.
“How do you say "get out of my apartment" in Spanish. No time to explain, just tell me.”
Raul raised his eyebrow.
Well now. This was unexpected.
