Title: Tinsel on the Tree

You’re no boy that believes in Saint Nick or flying reindeer or presents that suddenly appear if you’re good. You’ve long since grown out of that fantasy land of believing in something so foolish as that. The world hasn’t been kind by taking away your faith in the mystical away from you, but it’s practical so you accept it. You don’t get wrapped up in foolish sentimentality that only exists in movies, books, and songs. That’d be as stupid as believing in a fat man with a sleigh.

You were positive of this and that’s why you clung to your beliefs so strongly. But then there was that one year, at a stupid Christmas party, when the team decided it’d be stupid and funny and drunkenly awesome if they were to decorate a tree over at Iker and Sergio’s house. So you go, but you watch instead of participate.

That’s when you notice there’s a grace in Ezequiel’s fingers as he pulls the thick long strands of silver garland from the box of old Christmas decorations. You’d never noticed such a thing before, why is now so special? You wonder but don’t ask, watch but don’t stare. That’d be rude and improper and would lead to far too many questions, but you still watch him. He notices, somehow, and offers you one end.

“You follow, I’ll lead.” He says warmly.

You wonder if he’s talking about decorating the tree or something else. You aren’t sure if you want there to be more in his words and you aren’t sure if you should listen to him. Nevertheless, you move closer and touch his hand while taking the thick shiny decoration from his hands.

When Esteban tells you that he has a present for you, you already know it’s going to be something unconventional. He’s not exactly the most mainstream of people, but that’s just another of the many things you like, perhaps even love, about him.

“Just relax, Ruben. Trust me, this will be fantastic.” Esteban promises with a grin and the only thing you can do is nod and agree. You’ve gone for a walk around the city, enjoying the feel of Christmas and the cold air that is a refreshing breeze, despite the chill.

“Here we are.” He says and then you notice that you’ve stopped by a horse-drawn carriage. You raise your eyebrow and he explains. “Well there’s no snow, so I couldn’t find a reindeer. I tried.”

You smile and get into the carriage with him and tell him that it’s a wonderful present. You hold his hand for the entire ride underneath the blanket across your laps and you smile the whole way. Who said romance was dead anyway?

Turkey has no snow but Germany does and, while it may not be Spain, there’s a Christmas feeling in the air that can’t be shaken no matter how much Grinch one might try to be. Raul takes him around the high street with all the shops and they walk past carolers, families buying last minute packages, and stop outside a sweetshop to smell all the cinnamon and sugar and spice. For a few minutes it’s almost like they’ve stepped into a fairy tale on a children’s book’s page, but when Guti drags Raul into a small alleyway out of sight of any passers-by and kisses him, Raul knows there’s nothing innocent or fantastical about it.

It’s all real and it’s more of a wonder than any wonderland could ever possess.
