Daniel’s body was inked from his shoulders down. Martin loved that, but he would never tell anyone about it. Underneath the ink, Daniel’s body was pale, soft, but hard over muscle. Martin knew that from when he had had the few chances to touch his body.

To say that he had a crush on Daniel would be a bit of an understatement.

But Martin wasn’t stupid, he wouldn’t dare go after Daniel or make an advancement in any way. He was the kid, the rookie. He was the one that the senior lads teased for being so young but so developed and physical. He was the benchwarmer that was subbed in or taken off early.

Martin didn’t mind that. It was his dream to play for Liverpool and as long as he played, he didn’t mind. He would’ve loved more time, who wouldn’t? But he understood that he wasn’t good enough to play as much as the others.

It was during that time on the bench, when he watched the rest of the squad playing in the match, that he would study Daniel. The tall boy that was so approachable and so seemingly distant at the same time. The boy that liked to laugh and smile, so long as it was with the right person. The boy that was a damn good player and a great mate, to hear the other lads tell it. The boy that Martin couldn’t stop thinking about.

Martin had resigned himself to the fact that he would at best be friends with Daniel, not even best mates or anything, but that friend you needed when you needed help moving or were bored and all your other mates were otherwise busy. He could handle that because it was at least something, and that was what mattered.

But right now, as approachable as he made himself out to be, Martin wasn’t anything other than the kid that Daniel smiled at sometimes.

It was after training, somehow he’d lucked out in being paired off with Carra and Danny for the warm-up, and he was waiting for the energy to get up to go shower. He hadn’t realized how being ill could wind a person, but he had quickly figured out that coming back to first-team training after having a cold was quite tiring.

“Come on kid, don’t let the gaffer see you panting.” Carra winked before striding past dressed in nothing but what he had come into this world with. Martin blinked at Carra’s complete lack of care of what he was dressed in before Pepe walked in right after him in the same fashion.

A small laugh came from Daniel, who had the mercy to wear a towel. Martin looked up confused and Daniel stopped to pat his shoulder. Martin had to take a moment to force his eyes away from watching water drops run down Daniel’s chest and to find the strength to remain breathing normally at the feeling of his hand on his shoulder.

“You might want to wait a few moments. Let them have their fun.” Daniel winked before removing his hand. At Martin’s confused look, Daniel shook his head and laughed quietly. “So young.”

Martin narrowed his eyes at Daniel’s accented voice telling of his lack of age. He quickly looked around and saw that they were alone, the rest of the lads having already occupied themselves in the shower.

“What’s that mean?” Martin asked, standing. It felt like for once that he wasn’t looking down at anyone; Daniel was eye-level with him.

Daniel raised an eyebrow before frowning slightly in confusion. “You’re naïve…you’re young. This is obvious to anyone with eyes.”

Martin couldn’t explain it, but he didn’t like the feeling he had in his gut when Daniel called him young and naïve. One moment he was standing a respectable few feet away and the next he was pressing Daniel back into the lockers.

It started as a kiss—a hard, demanding, unwavering kiss that neither of them wanted to give in to. Martin had his hand on Daniel’s neck, and Daniel’s was on his waist. There were only a few seconds of hesitation on Daniel’s part before he was kissing him back. After a few seconds, but as far as Martin was concerned it could’ve been lifetimes, Daniel took possession of the exchange and somehow Martin was the one leaning closer, holding Daniel’s body tighter for support so that he wouldn’t fall. But he had fallen, too much already, and the free-fall had only just begun.

A sharp whistle had them jumping apart. Martin’s cheeks quickly shifted from vanilla to scarlet when he saw the captain walking in to the dressing room.

“Alright Danny?” Stevie asked, striding to the eight locker.

“Just fine Steve. Just…having a discussion with our newest defender.” Daniel replied, composing himself quickly.

Steven nodded and quickly made his preparations to leave. “Tell Carra that he’s hosting poker night this week.”

Martin wasn’t sure who he was talking to, but Daniel’s nod led him to think that it didn’t matter that he didn’t answer. The sounds of the lads in the shower were growing, meaning that they were about due back.

Martin looked over to Daniel who was calmly redressing himself. He swallowed at the sight of the inky patterns on Daniel’s back.

“So…?” Martin asked, biting his lip. He hoped that he hadn’t made a huge mistake.

Daniel finished buttoning his shirt before he turned to face Martin. A small look of amusement crossed his face. “So what? A kiss is nothing.”

Martin watched Daniel shrug a shoulder. For the second time in less than ten minutes, Martin felt a strange surge of emotion.

“What do you mean ‘it’s nothing’? It’s everything!”

Daniel took several strides closer and Martin watched as if in slow-motion as Daniel leaned over and kissed him softly on the lips. Once more, Martin quickly found himself surrendering. He wished he had stronger willpower, especially around Daniel.

Daniel stepped back and brushed his lips by Martin’s ear. “A kiss is nothing when shared for no other purpose than anger. It could be everything if given by a lover.”

Martin swallowed hard at Daniel’s words. In the still-functioning slush of his brain, he refocused on the noise coming louder from the shower.

Daniel stepped back further. “You’re too young to know that. Come by mine if you ever want to learn the difference.”

Martin watched Daniel walk out the door and he slowly lowered himself to the bench. He took several calming breaths as the other boys came back into the changing rooms.

“Alright lad?” Carra asked, walking back into the room—again without a towel.

“Yeah…yeah.” Martin cleared his throat. “Steven said that poker night is at yours this week.”

Carra thanked him for the information before turning to face Pepe. Martin watched them interact for a few seconds before deciding that he needed to go take his shower. He took a second to listen to Daniel’s voice repeat in his mind.

Martin wasn’t sure if he would go or not, but he knew that he wouldn’t forget what Daniel had said anytime soon.
