A small shift in the air creates a current as it grows in intensity. The newly formed breeze floats around the pavement, picking up a few dried leaves left on the sidewalk from where they had fallen. It spins them in a circle, carrying them higher and higher, before dropping them suddenly as if the gust had lost interest the way a child forgets about a toy. The breeze moves inside a large open space surrounded by metal and plastic and glass and whistles around in circles as if it were racing itself to meet somewhere in the middle.

Thousands of empty seats waiting to be filled are the only witnesses to the event as the silence reigns in the great stadium. Spelled out in yellow amongst the rows of blue seats are the words, “mes que un club”. The grass of the pitch is covered with a tarp to protect the ground from moisture. It was quickly growing dark inside the stadium as it was growing dark everywhere. In the morning, the stadium would come alive and draw energy from the crowd as they watched a great match was to be played between two rivals of great and noble importance.

This afternoon, though, the stadium would rest before the influx of energy in the stands. The days have grown shorter and colder as the months of September and October floated past, as if time were nothing more than a small mountain stream, drifting along to a destination unknown at its own pace. The eleventh month of the year was almost over, exams and holiday breaks looming for students and the noticeable change in seasons for the adults.

Another powerfully chilling breeze floats off the coast and spins through the city streets, ruffling the blue frills on a boy’s scarf. The boy shivers in the chilling wind and hopes that he does not have to wait much longer for his friend to finish inside the building before they could walk home together. His brother and his companion had already departed, on the boy’s wishes, to go play video games together. The bricks were cold and hard behind him as the sun continued to sink lower into the sky. The smell of sea salt filled his mind, while the sounds of traffic quietly faded.

“Come on Silva, hurry up.” Cesc whispers in the air to no one as he shivers with another breeze. The street is quiet, only the occasional car passing by. He wonders what is taking so long for the small boy still inside. On the street, he did not see any other people walking. Probably inside drinking hot chocolate next to a fireplace, he thought jealously. I wouldn’t mind doing that with Iker.

The thought of his lover made him smile. In the past three months, Cesc had learned quite a few things about his boyfriend during the time they had spent together. He enjoyed seeing Cesc happy, as he would take him out to dinner and buy him little things. He had a great influence around town; the presence that he was treated with whenever they had gone out together to a few restaurants had shown that to Cesc. He was fairly reserved in the sense that he did not find flashing things about very entertaining. His father was also a very prominent official in the city, as Iker had told him once when Cesc had asked about his family. His mother had died when he had just been a boy and his father had remarried only once to a truly awful, in Iker’s opinion, and vain woman named Elen.

Cesc never asked who Iker’s father was because he didn’t want to see Iker upset. Iker never liked talking about his father; every time he had, he had talked about him in such contempt that Cesc wondered what the man had done or was doing to him to make Iker think of him so negatively. Cesc would hug Iker and kiss him till the man was back to relatively normal.

“Hey Cesc.” His name coming from the intense quiet startles him until Cesc looks up to see who it is.

He lets out a breath as he stands up straight. “Hi Vicente.”

“Are you waiting for somebody too?” The other boy asks as he zips up his coat.

“Yeah, I’m waiting on Silva.” Cesc replies, grateful that he has at least somebody to talk to while he waits.

“I saw him and Villa talking about something. I guess that’s what happens when you’re chemistry partners.” Vicente rolls his eyes as Cesc laughs.

“I guess so. Were you waiting on him?” Cesc asks, thinking it rather odd that Vicente was still here. He and his ‘crowd’ were usually the first ones out the door—if they even bothered to show up that day.

Vicente laughs at something. “I guess you could say that.” He moves closer to Cesc as another breeze comes quicker and colder than the last. “It’s not exactly the warmest day of the year out here is it?”

Cesc shivers again at the mention. “No, it’s really not.”

“We could go wait inside, if you want too.” Chente suggests and Cesc considers it.

“I don’t know why I didn’t think of that.” Cesc laughs at his own stupidity. “I guess I believed Silva when he said ‘it will only take a minute’.”

“So you and Silva are pretty good friends, huh?” Vicente asks as he stands in the lobby.

“Yeah. He’s a good friend.” Cesc doesn’t even have to think of his response.

“He’s sort of cute too. In a teddy bear kind of way.” Vicente shrugs. “If you like that type of thing.”

“I guess so…?” Cesc hadn’t thought of Silva that way before and he wonders what Villa would think if he realized he was attracted to a teddy bear. The thought amuses him so much he has to cough to hide his giggle.

“What?” Vicente asks smiling. “What did I say?”

Cesc shakes his head. “It’s nothing, I was just thinking of something.”

“Tell me.” Vicente slides closer to Cesc as they both lean against the wall in the foyer.

“It’s nothing, really.” Cesc shakes his head and looks down at his shoes. He had discovered on the second day of school that there was no way he could ever look Vicente in the eyes without blushing. No wonder the girls called him ‘mister dreamy eyes’. It was as if he could look into your soul with just a glance; it sounded like something the drama club would come up with, but Cesc believed it.

Vicente remains quiet for a few moments as they enjoy the warmth of the building. Most of the staff had already left, it being a Friday after all.

“Can, can I ask you something?” Cesc asks after a minute.

“Cesc, you trust me as I trust you not to create a nuclear disaster in chemistry. I think it’s safe to say you can ask me just about anything.” Vicente laughs.

Cesc laughs too, but there is very little humor in it. “Why are you still here? It’s a Friday and you usually leave early anyway.”

Vicente swallows and looks away. “You wouldn’t believe me if I told you anyway.”

Cesc just looks at him confused. “I might, you can always try me. Didn’t you just say a minute ago that we trusted each other?”

“Yeah, I guess I did.” Vicente clears his throat. “I heard Silva say in the hallway that he wanted to talk to Villa and um, well, I had a pretty good idea that you would hang around and wait on him and since David was busy talking to Silva, well…”

Cesc’s forehead scrunches up in confusion. “So, you wanted to see me? Why? You see me in chemistry all the time.”

“I know.” Vicente says and then for once it is him that breaks eye contact. “I kind of like you Cesc.”

“I kind of like you to—oh.” Cesc gets what Vicente means and then looks down at his shoes, flattered.

“Yeah.” Vicente looks away, embarrassed. “You know, usually this doesn’t happen to me. Usually it’s everybody else that tells me that they like me and I have to turn them down. But you, you really don’t see me as ‘mister dreamy eyes’ or whatever the girls are calling me these days.”

“That’s because I don’t, care about you I mean. I mean, not like that, I care about you as a friend, I just mean that I don’t care that you’re like, rich or anything.” Cesc stammered to cover up his slip up as he saw Vicente swallow thickly and stare wide-eyed at him. “You have very nice eyes.”

Vicente smiles slightly. “Thanks. So do you.”

Cesc blushes and looks down. “Um, no offense or anything Chente, I’m flattered, I really am. But um, I’m sort of…”

“Not interested?” Vicente supplies when Cesc stalls.

“No, trust me I would definitely be interested! I’m just kind of, seeing someone.” Cesc fumbles through his words.

“Oh, well of course you are. I mean you’re a great guy.”

“Thanks. So are you.” Cesc smiles shyly. They lapse into a very awkward silence.

“Well, this won’t change anything, though right? I mean, you’re my chemistry partner and all and I don’t want this to hurt that.” Cesc asks and then feels like an idiot for even opening his mouth.

“No, no it’s cool. I do find it all a little ironic that we have chemistry together.” Vicente makes a face and Cesc sees the humor in it too. They look at each other before bursting out in laughter.

“Hey, what’s so funny?” Villa asks as he lowers his arm from around Silva’s shoulders.

“We have ‘chemistry’ together.” Cesc replies, still giggling.

“Cesc, you are just now realizing that? You have sat next to mister dr—Vicente since the start of the year.” Silva says and looks at Cesc worriedly.

“No, I knew that. You would have had to have been here Silva.” Cesc says and gives Chente a small smile.

“Are you guys done?” Vicente asks, noticing the way Villa and Silva were standing close together.

“Yeah.” Villa says coolly. “I think so. Silva?”

Silva turns big brown eyes to the other boy. “I’m very done.”

Villa smirks at something that passes between the two of them and Cesc shakes his head. He had a feeling that he really didn’t want to know…

The four of them started for the door and Silva shivered as the blast of cold air hit him in the face.

“Hey, I have a great idea!” Vicente says once the door shuts behind them.

“What’s that?” Villa asks, still standing close to Silva.

Vicente grins a very white and perfectly straight grin and looks at Cesc when he says it. “Let’s all go to dinner!”
