The world was spinning, dizzyingly fast and things weren’t ending up on the right side of wrong. There was smoke and fire and blood, not his own of course, but hers, and that was wrong. So very wrong. Their mark was gone, bodyguards dead instead, and the mission had failed, and that was wrong. So very wrong. A bomb they hadn’t seen and the world was spinning, fast and out of control and wrong. It was all wrong.
Loki pulled her away from the rubble after he had found her. His ears rang from the loud explosion but that wasn’t what concerned him most. There was a large stain of red, gushing just like the ledger she had had, just above her heart. A gash across her head wasn’t helping either. Loki swallowed and checked to see how much energy was inside of her, if she would survive. He swallowed harder when he realized she would never make it, not even back to the helicopter, to a hospital, to someone who could save her.
“Natasha…” he says and hopes she can hear him over the ringing in their ears. When her eyes dazedly met his, Loki saw the flicker of disappointment in them. A pang hit him hard in the stomach, and then the heart when he realized something he could do. One last thing for her. “Do you—do you want me to be…him?”
Her eyes closed and a single tear slid down her cheek. He felt her energy sliding away and so he took it as his answer. Loki ignored his pain and changed his form to that of Barton. If he had to suffer for these few minutes just to give her peace, he would. She wouldn’t trust him to comfort her, not ever, but he could give her the necessary moments to pretend it was someone else, someone she had trusted for years.
“Tasha…” he said in Barton’s voice. Loki watched her eyes open and the familiarity that crossed them when she saw his new face. He wondered for a moment if she truly believed it was Barton, come to her on angel’s wings to help her greet death, before he focused on the present. He pulled her close to him so that her head rested on Barton’s thigh and Barton’s arm held her against Barton’s body.
“You’re a lie, but thank you.” She murmured softly, but Loki still heard it. He swallowed hard and looked at her face. He wanted to ask ‘do you trust me now?’ but it wasn’t the time. He’d never have a time to ask that question again because this would be the final time, the only time he would ever be so close. Loki nodded Barton’s head once and shifted to hold her close against his chest.
“It will all be all right,” he said, and hoped it wasn’t too bold of a lie. “You’ll be safe, soon.”
Natasha opened her mouth to speak, but didn’t have the strength. She had her eyes on his—Barton’s—mouth and Loki understood. His throat was beginning to burn as his eyes began to sting, but he lowered Barton’s head to hers. Loki couldn’t control himself from slipping back into his own state in the kiss. Once he pulled back though, he noticed she was still and her eyes were unseeingly staring at the sky.
Swallowing hard, Loki pulled her closer to him and held her against his body while his face buried itself in her chest. A scarlet stain crossed his pale skin, but Loki didn’t care. His mind grew dizzy and the world began to spin again. He hoped when it stopped, the world would be right again and that this would all be just a dream.
