Martin has kissed lots of people in his time. Okay, not really. Mostly his mam, his Gran—but those weren’t real kisses. That would be horrible! Real kisses he’s done only happened with one or two girls he knew from school, and maybe one other one he met in a club one night. The truth is, he doesn’t really kiss many people. He doesn’t think he’s good at it; he’s convinced himself that it’s not his style.

He convinces himself so well that he believes it, and that’s how it stays and how he decides one rainy afternoon, that’s how it will always stay.

Until there is Daniel. Martin’s never wanted to kiss a boy before, not even back when he was kissing people that weren’t his family. Under normal circumstances, he thinks that he wouldn’t even have considered kissing a man before. But…Daniel is different, he’s…well, Daniel. Comfortable, safe, reliable Daniel. Who is funny, sweet, and charming all at the same time. Daniel who Martin would like to think of as a friend and mentor, and…somebody to kiss? He guesses so.

When he finally gets his chance, at the back of the bus at night driving home from another away match, it isn’t what he wants, or expects. He had managed to get on the bus first and with the open selection of seats, he chose one in the back for privacy and the chance to nod off and no one say anything. Daniel was only a few people behind him, but he too had this idea, and came to sit back in the back as well. Martin hadn’t minded at all, at least not until Daniel sat in the seat next to him.

He isn’t quite sure how it happens, but only that somehow it does. The lights are out and it’s nighttime outside, the bus lights are useless to be anything but irritating, and they are hidden somehow. Daniel is smiling beautifully and Martin notices he keeps staring at the Dane’s lips. Daniel notices, or Martin accidentally makes it too obvious or probably both, and Daniel leans closer and kisses him on the lips.

Martin thinks he should pull back, to be disgusted, to tell Daniel to piss off, but he doesn’t. He doesn’t want to. He realizes that what is socially acceptable is the complete and polar opposite of what he wants so he gives in and kisses Daniel back. It doesn’t last long, it can’t, not here and not now, but it happens. Martin is positive that it happens.

He is also positive that for the rest of the ride home, while their teammates sleep around them, Daniel holds Martin’s hand and doesn’t let go until the bus stops in the car park at Anfield.
